View Full Version : New 2 U Challenge - CLOSED - Winner Announced!

New 2 U Challenge hosted by I Scrap Designs (http://www.visualdesignsbychris.com/store/manufacturers.php?manufacturerid=22) and Sam & Hailey Designs (http://www.visualdesignsbychris.com/store/manufacturers.php?manufacturerid=23)
The kids have gone back to school and now it’s time for U. Yes, “you” and also “U,” as in University. That’s right; it’s time for you to be creative and challenge yourself to learn something new but without paying tuition. Doesn’t that sound like fun?
So, here’s how to play:
Try a technique that is new to you and upload a photo of your project to the gallery (http://visualdesignsbychris.com/gallery/). This must be a new project that has not been posted anywhere online prior to today (9/28/11) and it must include one technique you have not tried before today (9/28/11). Then come back to this thread and post a link to your picture.
On October 31, we will host 2 sets of random drawings. Yes, that means 2 sets of prizes!!!
2 Grand Prizes will go to 2 participants. They will win 2 free files of their choice (one from Sam & Hailey Designs (http://www.visualdesignsbychris.com/store/manufacturers.php?manufacturerid=23) and one from I Scrap Designs (http://www.visualdesignsbychris.com/store/manufacturers.php?manufacturerid=22)).
2 Second Place Prizes will also go to 2 participants. They will win one free file (the first winner from Sam & Hailey Designs (http://www.visualdesignsbychris.com/store/manufacturers.php?manufacturerid=23) and the second winner from I Scrap Designs (http://www.visualdesignsbychris.com/store/manufacturers.php?manufacturerid=22)).
You can submit up to 2 new projects for this New 2 U Challenge. Even better than that, you’ll get 2 entries into the drawing for every project that uses a file from Sam & Hailey Designs (http://www.visualdesignsbychris.com/store/manufacturers.php?manufacturerid=23) or I Scrap Designs (http://www.visualdesignsbychris.com/store/manufacturers.php?manufacturerid=22). These do not have to be newly purchased files, but because our galleries are lonely, please post the pictures using our files in our galleries here for Sam & Hailey Designs (http://visualdesignsbychris.com/gallery/g608-sam26-hailey-designs.html) and here for I Scrap Designs (http://visualdesignsbychris.com/gallery/g607-i-scrap-designs.html). Thanks!
Need some more help?
First, remember you do not have to invent a new technique; your new technique just has to be New 2 U. In other words, just try something new!
So here are just a few ideas:
*Have you ever tried distressing?
*What about sewing by machine or by hand?
*folding
*tearing
*painting
*stamping
*mosaics
*digital crafting
*hybrid crafting
*Tried a monochromatic color scheme?
*How about a complementary color scheme (i.e. blue and orange)?
What's that? You can't think of anything new. You think you've tried all the techniques out there already? Well, we’ve all got some outdated or less than pretty papers in our stash, right? Well, how about taking one of those papers and making it new by turning it into a project you love?
Of course, these are just a few ideas. You are welcome to choose any new technique that interests you.
We’ll update this post with those who have participated. You have until October 31, 2011 to post your pictures.
We’re so excited and can’t wait to see what your create!

so here is my effort... I have used "not so pretty papers" as my Challenge and it was quite difficult at first. However, I now see them (all 100 of them) in a new light and can see that I may use them in projects. I just needed to look at them as parts rather than a whole 12X12" sheet.
I have used Ileana's IR00192 - Notched Stain Glass Window (http://www.visualdesignsbychris.com/store/product.php?productid=18085&cat=0&page=1) and my horrible papers on the front as well as inside.

okay... here is another Technique new to me.... I made a Mini Book, actually I have made three in the last couple of days but they do not have any cutter files on them yet. I saw this on a Blog somewhere but she uses envelopes as a basis. I created mine from scratch in my KNK software.
I have made a couple more, 3 ringed binder minis, one of which I am using as a record of Lachlan's first year as a present for his parents. I will come back with that one once I have cutter files on it though.

okay, I know this will exceed the two postings allowed but I need some help with this one!
I made my own Glimmer Mist on the weekend using a mixture of Pearl Ex, water and white glue. The problem is, although the colour is gorgeous and very shimmery (in the right light), it is really spotty! is this normal for Glimmer Mist ? what have I done wrong?
(Card was designed for a MTC Challenge, cut out of white card, then sprayed)
janbryson
10-09-2011, 12:33 PM
Hmmm... I made my own glimmer mist before. I used the Perfect Pearls and water and just added a few drops of alcohol ink. I didn't add glue at all. Maybe that's why yours came out spotty???
aussie_caz
10-09-2011, 12:39 PM
apparently I need to add the glue as Pearl Ex does not have a built in adhesive quality as does Perfect Pearls. I don't have Perfect Pearls, just 24 tubs of Pearl Ex I wanted to use LOL
bzyPTmom28
10-09-2011, 12:56 PM
I know Pearl ex doesn't have that finish stuff in it--but I thought you just needed to spray it with something over the top--like a finishing layer so it wouldn't smudge, I didn't know you had to add glue to the mix. I know I found a pearl ex suggestions list somewhere a while ago--but I don't know where. I just found this link http://paperart.wordpress.com/2008/01/09/make-your-own-glimmer-mist/ thought splitcoast stampers, sounds like some had success but used a mod podge type glue. Good luck!

The recipe I read said to use Gum Arabic. It's available in craft stores in the art department.
I'm wondering if your problem is the spray bottle, though, and not your recipe. Some spray bottles aren't as fine as others.
aussie_caz
10-10-2011, 01:52 PM
I used a mini mister so that wasn't the problem I don't think.... however, I just checked out the recipe from PaperArt (thanks Sheri) and mine looks the same as theirs, so maybe that is how is works :)
Thanks for all the suggestions everyone!

here are some techniques that I tried:
Love Card
I distressed the paper with three colors, aged mahogany, weathered wood and peeled paint. stitched the hearts with metallic thread. used chalk pencils on the dragon fly and then stickles are it and on the letter love.
Happy Birthday Card
I tried my embossing tool on my gazelle die cutter machine, you need to do it 2-3 times to make it show up.
Quilting Card
I used one of my quilt pattern but used paper, brad to attach the middle and put dazzle flowers in the corners.
Rose Card
I used a dauber paint (gold) on a rose stencil, love how the texture looks.
Used pink chalk for the background. Tied a red ribbon on the stem of the rose.

What is marble print?
I Scrap Designs
10-20-2011, 07:26 AM
I think Caz is referring to painting with marbles.
You tape your paper in the bottom of a shallow box or pan. Put the paint in a cup and toss in some marbles. Make sure the marbles are coated in paint. Then put the marbles in the box. Pick up the box and make the marbles roll around to paint the paper.
It's a fun technique and yields pretty cool results.
aussie_caz
10-20-2011, 12:58 PM
yes... that's it, although there is another sort of marbling. You put some wallpaper paste in a shallow container and then put paint on the top. Swirl around gently and then lay your paper over the top and lift... voila!!

So when I first thought about what I wanted to do with this challenge, I was thinking I wanted to try something hybrid. I have been wanting to try digital for a while now, but just don't seem to do it. I know I just need to dig in and start...usually the hardest part...starting. Anyway, so I didn't get anything digital done in time to have it printed somewhere and we currently don't have a working printer at home. So, I had to go with another idea. I had bought some fun flock and a glue pad a while ago but had not used them. So, I used those to try to make my wings look fuzzy on Ileana's Frilly Wings and Things file. Not sure how much I like working with fun flock...
Here is my card (I will put a sentiment on later):

Here's my new to me item. I finally got that vinyl on canvas wall haning done for my grandson. It looks pretty much the same as when I showed y'all the idea made with cardstock. I painted the 12x12x1 canvas with brown , two coats. Then applied the vinyl, it's not too bad, but I think vinyl would have gone on better with a slicker surface. And lining it up square was really the hard part. I tried really hard to sqaure up each colored segment block on the transfer paper, it's not perfect, but it's the best I could do. I didn't use any files, just my own design. Wonder if using mod podge with cardstock on canvas would have been a better idea, what do you think?

Using Heat Transfer Vinyl and Rhinestones, I decorated this tote bag (http://visualdesignsbychris.com/gallery/challenges/p2017-new-2u-challenge.html) to hold a couple bottles of wine for a hostess gift.
I’ve had rhinestone supplies in my stash for about two years and HTV supplies for about two months but this is the first time I’ve used either of them. Don’t know why it took so long to try these because I’m in love with both! The HTV is so easy to cut and weed. The rhinestone template was a tad bit harder but still fun. I can’t wait to do more.

I've actually read on the bosskut forum that the Gazelles needs an update especially for the print and cut feature. I'll have to send it in! UGH that's not fair. Something about a new mother board, I don't know when we have to send it, but I might as well do it and have a "like-new" machine! But first I have to get some things cut for the retreat Nov 11-13, and then make sure I get all my Christmas card ideas in place.

I had always watched videos of the whole print and cut--Pazzles doesn't have the electric eye, but if you go to the Pazzles craft room, check out Klo's classroom, she posts all the videos she does for her live classes there and they are free to everyone--it's using the Pazzles software which is basically the Funtime program--last night's class she gave us the patterns, explained everything in detail and since I have dual screen on my computer, could work right along with her as we did the process--I've heard other machiens with an electric eye do better at this, but I usually prefer to do my own diecuts and stamping stuff, but I learned lots of new stuff in this software, which is a good thing. So Pam you may be able to do print and cut with your Gazelle--especially if you check out the video form last night. Thanks for your positive comments everyone! And Pam--I love the vinyl project you did for your new grandson--outstanding!

Yeah, I use a funtime program on my Pazzles--it comes with a basic one but then I purchased the design Pro one--I can use SVG files, has rhinestones etc and a bunch of cool stuff. I was just never a fan of print and cut, I thought it was sort of "cheating"--but this project I did with Klo is kinda cool--I've got a magnet on it and put it on my fridge, the biggest deal was learning how to cut pieces out of the original clip art, then you just pop it up with a pop dot-then of course I had to use my glitter pens to add just a bit of bling. The trick when you don't have an electric eye is to make your cut line thicker, so that if it is just a tiny bit "off" it doesn't matter--and of course my handy glitter pens covered any boo-boos. I really do like the software, there are so many little cool features and every time I do a class with Klo I learn something new!

We will be having the drawing for this tonight! Please make sure you check the first post in this thread and see if you are listed. I'd hate to miss anyone! Also, if you used a design from Ileana or me and we missed it, let me know that, too. ASAP!!

Congrats to the winners!!! Sheri, I watched Klo's video on the layered print and cut, sorta understood it until I tried to cut the print, I just don't know how my machine does that yet, need practice, spent too long messing with it....SO know what I did? I cut it out with scissiors and put it together, it's AWESOME too! Oh, but now I need to add bling! LOL And now I will look at clip art with a different perspective! :)
